License Plates Renewal Help Vehicle Services
Some questions are answered in the FAQ section. HELP can explain why you received an error message or how to correct your computer settings.
Setting Your Browser:
CyberService requires that you use a browser version of 4 or higher. Depending on your browser type, go to on one of these sites and download a higher version.
CyberService incorporates extensive graphics throughout the site. To use the system, please use a browser that supports graphics.
System is Down?
Error Messages 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,999 – If you received an error message stating that the online system is temporarily unavailable, you may renew immediately using the touch-tone renewal system by calling (800) 664-1212 and using VISA, MasterCard, Diner’s Club or Discover credit cards. This message means that communication within some part of our system is currently unavailable. You may try to renew later when the system is available again.
Incorrect Information Entered
Error Messages 10, 11, 12, 13, 503 – Be very careful entering and verifying your information. If you mistyped your Registration ID or PIN, the system will not access your record for renewal.
Plate Cannot Be Renewed
Error Messages 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 503 – In a small number of instances, there are problems with a vehicle registration after the mailing of a renewal notice containing valid Registration ID or PIN. If you receive this message, something within your registration is being questioned by the Secretary of State’s office and you must visit your nearest Driver Services Facility to sort out the matter.
Plate Cannot Be Renewed
Error Messages 30, 31 – This license plate cannot be renewed electronically. Please renew by mail or visit your nearest Driver Services Facility.
Error Message 33, 34, 35 – Our records indicate that your registration has expired. The plate number may have been assigned to another individual during the lapse. Visit your nearest Driver Services Facility.
Error Message 41– Our records indicate that this registration was already renewed. You may want to check with a spouse or someone else who may have renewed within several hours of your attempt to use the CyberService License Plates Renewal system. To verify the status of your registration, you may call 800-252-8980 (toll free in Illinois) or 217-785-3000 (outside Illinois) and a customer service representative can tell you when and where the registration was renewed.
Error Message 47 – Our records indicate that your license plate is revoked. No one may drive the vehicle until the revocation is removed. For more information regarding this revocation, please contact the Public Inquiry Division at (800) 252-8980.
If you want to request a hearing to contest the revocation, you must contact the Department of Administrative Hearings.
Error Message 48 – Our records indicate that your license plate is suspended. No one may drive the vehicle until the suspension is removed. For more information regarding this suspension, please contact the Public Inquiry Division at (800) 252-8980.

Error Message 54 – Your license plates have been suspended for failure to comply with Illinois' Mandatory Insurance Law. A vehicle with suspended plates/registration cannot be driven by anyone. To remove the suspension action, you may either visit a Level III Driver Services facility or call the Mandatory Insurance Division at 217-524-4946. Error Message 504 – If you have purchased a different car and must update your registration file with new vehicle information, you cannot use the CyberService License Plates Renewal system. You may renew by mail or by visiting the nearest Driver Services Facility.
Credit Card,Checking Account
Error Messages 505, 506, 508, 509, 510, 511, 512, 513, 514, 515, 517, 518, 520,521,522,523,524,525,526,527 – There are at least two scenarios when you would receive this error message. Be very careful entering and verifying your information. You may have miskeyed your credit card number or your routing number or your account number or forgot to insert the correct expiration date from your credit card. The other possibility was that the payment gateway that processes the fees was not available at the time you were trying to renew. You may either renew online at a later hour, or you may use the touch-tone renewal system immediately or mail-in or in person options.
Error Message 600 – If you received this error, Secretary of State personnel will contact you within the next few days. We will process your registration renewal and double-check that your credit card was accepted and contact you regarding the outcome.
